Haloween Mocktails

Sarah Brown
As the leaves turn and the air gets cooler, it's time to embrace the spirit of Halloween. That means costumes, candy, and yes, refreshing drinks that everyone can enjoy. In our home, we skip the alcoholic options and go straight to the fun of mocktails.

Equipment

  • Small pot
  •  fine strainer or cheesecloth
  • stirring spoon
  • glasses for serving

Ingredients

  • Here’s what you’ll need for this berry-filled delight:
  • - 1 cup blackberries
  • - 1 cup blueberries
  • - 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • - 2 tablespoons water
  • - 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • - 4 cups chilled lemon-lime soda
  • - Mint leaves for garnish optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Berry Mixture

  • Start by taking a small pot and tossing in the blackberries and blueberries. Add the sugar, water, and lime juice. Using a wooden spoon, mix everything together. This mixture is the base of your syrup and will bring out the beautiful flavors of the berries.

Step 2: Heat It Up

  • Set your pot on medium heat and bring the berry mixture to a gentle simmer. During this time, keep stirring and occasionally pressing down on the berries. This helps release their delightful juices and enhances the syrup's flavor. Allow it to simmer for about five minutes.

Step 3: Strain the Syrup

  • Once the mixture has simmered and thickened slightly, you’ll want to strain it. Take your fine strainer or cheesecloth and place it over a bowl or another pot. Carefully pour the berry mixture through the strainer, using a spoon to press the berries down and extract as much syrup as possible. Discard the solid parts once you’ve gotten all the juice!

Step 4: Assemble Your Mocktail

  • Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Fill each glass with ice (this adds an extra chill factor). Add about 2-4 tablespoons of your freshly made berry syrup over the ice. Top it off with the chilled lemon-lime soda and stir gently to mix.

Step 5: Garnish and Enjoy

  • Lastly, drop in a few fresh berries for added flair and, if you want an extra touch, top with a mint leaf. Serve immediately and enjoy the cheers and smiles that come with this festive mocktail!

Notes

- Homemade Syrup: This syrup can be made ahead of time, making it easy to whip up drinks instantaneously when guests arrive.
- Adjust the Sweetness: Feel free to adjust the sugar based on your personal preference—more for a sweeter drink, less for a tarter taste.
- Fruity Variations: Experiment with other fruits like raspberries or strawberries for a unique twist.
- Keep it Chill: Make sure your soda is nice and chilled for a refreshing experience.
- Garnishing: Don't skip the garnishing! It adds a special touch and looks great in photos.
